The Gloria Story Shades of White album new music review

Gloria Story, The: Shades of White

Rock
4.0/5.0

One song into The Gloria Story's debut Shades of White and you know this is old school rock. With little apology, Gloria Story channels its influences including Thin Lizzy, Bowie, Cheap Trick, T-Rex, Kiss and many others, through their catchy and hip rock tunes. This in turn is passed through the modern alt scene from The Hellacopters to Goo Goo Dolls to Foo Fighters. To further mash the old school with the new, Gloria Story recorded the basic material live in the studio.

Many of the songs here are harmonious and marvelous rock rav ups like Valentino, Highway, or When Hearts Cease to Bloom. It's both ear candy and radio ready fodder. Steadier, sometimes heavier, pieces like That 70's Night (cowbell well intact) or Baby Let the Good Times Roll, are propelled by large vocal harmonies and catchy choruses. Perhaps the most significant feature to Shades of White is the pure, nearly stripped down, rock sound as heard on I Don't Wanna Be Your Bet; it's a raw and energetic sound with enough polish to impress the jaded modern listener.

The Gloria Story's debut Shades of White revives retro rock with energy and enthusiasm for a fresh alternative to the plastic-coated modern fare. Easily recommended, but it's too short.
