Sainted Sinners 2017 Debut Album CD Album Review

Sainted Sinners: Sainted Sinners

Melodic Hard Rock/Metal
4.5/5.0

Sainted Sinners is a new band with a multi-national cast based in Europe. It features the collaboration of founders American vocalist David Reece (Accept, Bangalore Choir, Bonfire) and German guitarist Frank Pane, also from Bonfire. The band is rounded out with Ferdy Doernberg (Axel Rudi Pell) on keyboards and additional guitars, Malte Burket on bass, and Hungarian Berci Hirleman on drums, both from the band Purpendicular. Sainted Sinners' self-titled debut arrives on Germany's El Puerto Records.

Sainted Sinners

For Reece and Pane, old school is the new school. The musicians have an interest and kinship in classic hard rock touched with an obvious metal edge, citing influences from Led Zeppelin to UFO, Whitesnake to Van Halen, among others. On several songs, like We Are All Sainted Sinners and Blue Lightning Man, they drop in slippery slide guitar from Doernberg, so you can add some classic American Southern rock to the mix. In a song such as In Need that slide guitar folds into something with a latent blues groove, so add another ingredient to the mix. Additionally, with the (sometimes) twin guitar work, large riffage, and blazing solos, you could call Sainted Sinners a very guitar-forward band. Really, the keyboards don't have a large presence, but they are there. Note the old school Hammond vibe within Maybe She's Got Balls. The final element in the mix is Reece's vocal style, which twists raspy hard rock with genuine soulful emotion. His performance throughout is strong and passionate. With these things in mind, you can see where Sainted Sinners are going with their tunes. For the most part, the whole album rocks when these elements work together. And that's also to say, there's no pussy ballads. However, This Love That I Have Found is somewhat of heavier, yet dialed back, anthem.

Fundamentally, Sainted Sinners is a modern expression of true classic hard rock, peppered liberally with blues, Southern rock, and blues influences. Additionally, musicianship and production are at a premium, making this album a successful and entertaining debut. Recommended.
