Here's a band, Adrenechrome, and their debut EP, Hideous Appetites for those of us who generally don't care for modern metal trends. Adrenechrome successfully blends classic thrash metal with the innovation of progressive metal and harsh heaviness of metalcore, while at the same time retaining melody and demonstrating some terrific musicianship.
Much of Adrenechrome's modernity comes from the near hardcore vocals that permeate every song and the crushing tone of the riffage. The two very things that turn me away from most current metal. However, after you get over these two things and listen carefully, you hear some really terrific modern metal. Guitarist and chief composer Chris Friesen writes some very interesting and innovative music. It's not enough for him and the band to be thrashing about as harshly as possible. They actually offer more technical arrangements that bend and swerve with the best progressive metal, and have actual, well-crafted, classic guitar guitar solos.
On both The Horror and Six Guns, you get a barrage of blistering modern thrash, which winds down with classic melodic metal. Winds of the Void is the closest to classic Eighties thrash metal, more melodic but still heavy. Locust Wings takes this motif, adds the prog nuances, and returns to the more 'core' vocal style. For tunes closest to modern metal expectations Titan's Fall and Hobbled deliver with the aforementioned harsh vocals and tone. While my least favorites, that under current of classic thrash metal makes them more interesting than most other current modern metal. Here's hoping that Adrenechrome can keep this elusive balance between past and present, classic melodic metal and it's bristling bastard child of harsh modern metal. Recommended.
