Everyone in the AOR rock universe knows the acronym. W.E.T. comes from the members' association with other bands, Robert Säll (g,k) and Andreas Passmark (b) from Work of Art, Erik Mårtensson (v,g,k) and Magnus Henriksson (g) from Eclipse, and Jeff Scott Soto (v) from Talisman. For their fifth and latest album, Apex, the drums are provided by Talisman's Jamie Borger.
Erik Mårtensson commented on getting the band back together: It's always a challenge to find that sweet spot in our calendars when we are all available, not to mention the fact that Jeff lives in California and the rest of us in Sweden. But I also believe that adds to our ambition once we are able to gather. We are all aware that we don't get too many shots at this, so when we do we gotta make it count.
As expected Apex is another tour-de-force of W.E.T.'s genre-defining and classic AOR-driven melodic hard rock. With their combined musical talents and song writing skills, the songs are remarkably consistent, fluid, and hard-hitting, yet with radio-friendly and arena ready accessibility. It's a perfect intersection of sonic perfection from the vocal and guitar harmony to song melody, rock rhythm and groove to catchy refrains and epic guitar solos. Pardon my lavish praise, but this album rocks with favorites Where Are The Heroes Now, What Are We Fighting For, Day By Day, and Believer to name a few. Even songs that appear to start as ballads, like Love Conquers All and Pleasure & Pain, rise with AOR power and punch. To turn a familiar phrase, it's all killer with no filler.
All said, Apex finds supergroup W.E.T. in excellent form, delivering another consistent, powerful, and entertaining album of their AOR-inspired melodic hard rock. Quite recommended.
