The roots of American rock band Alliance go way back to when Sammy Hagar became Van Halen's lead singer wherein his drummer David Lauser and guitarist Gary Pihl (Boston) sought to create a new project. It would take a few years. In 1993, the duo aligned with bass player Robert Berry (3, GTR) and Alan (Fitz) Fitzgerald (ex-Night Ranger), and Alliance was born. Their debut album Bond Of Union dropped in 1996, then five more would follow in the next 20-some years, the most recent being 2018's Fire And Grace. The core of the band remains Berry, Lauser, and Pihl, and now Alliance has signed with Frontiers Records for their latest and sixth album, Before Our Eyes.
The band members had these positive words for the new album: We are excited to have a new label and to be working with the team at Frontiers. With 5 albums released over the last 30 years we are feeling even more creative and energized by the possibilities that lie ahead. We are looking forward to reaching a wider audience and are already hard at work on album seven.
As with past albums and as expected, Alliance delivers classic melodic hard rock in an AOR wrapper. There's no reinventing the wheel here or fixing what's not broken. Solid songwriting develops from strong song melody, vocal and guitar harmony, abundant rock groove, hooks in refrains, and spry guitar work. The additional x-factor, if you will, is the creative versatility to be found in each song. No song sounds the same. You got some solid rockers with A Bone To Chew On, Right, Tell Somebody, and Nothing Will Make You Change. There's notable and excellent fusion of acoustic guitar with Face Of Justice and 100 Sad Goodbyes, something of a ballad. Then there's Can't Stop Messin' which has a heavier feeling wrapped in a funky groove. Essentially, Before Our Eyes is a strong album from start to finish.
All in all, with their latest and sixth album, Before Our Eyes, veteran musicians Alliance deliver another creative album of AOR-inspired classic melodic hard rock, driven by versatile songwriting and skillful musicianship. Easily recommended.
