Swedish band Streetlight, formed by producer, songwriter, guitarist, and lead vocalist Johannes Hager, appeared in 2023 with their debut album, aptly titled, Ignition. Drawing influences from great Eighties peers like Journey, Toto, Foreigner and more the quintet was intent on developing a classic AOR melodic rock sound, and the album was well-received by AOR fans. Now, the band returns with their sophomore follow up, Night Vision.
Founder Johannes Hager comments on the new album: It's been such a joy for us to record our sophomore album Night Vision. One could say that the stakes are higher now compared to the debut Ignition, but we felt there are still many untrodden paths for Streetlight, both musically but of course also career wise. We're still looking back at the AOR heydays, but we're not going back.
Musically, Streetlight is hitting all same characteristics they developed with their first album: solid song melody and vocal harmony, twin guitar harmony, vigorous rock groove, catchy choruses, bright synths for accent and ambience, and spry guitar solos. It's mash up of Seventies and Eighties classic AOR deja vu all over again.
Some fine rambunctious rockers arrive with Captured In The Night, End Game, Long Distance Runner, and especially the Eighties inspired Straight To Video. Having something of a West Coast feeling are Fly With Eagles and Leanna. An AOR album would not be AOR without some ballads (notably about love) including Where Did Love Go and Learn To Love Again.
All said, if you're a fan of classic AOR melodic rock made relevant for today, you will enjoy the entertaining and superb song craftsmanship of Streetlight's Night Vision, a successful follow-up to their debut Ignition. Easily recommended.
