With better than 25 years behind them, Germany's Primal Fear, founded by bassist Matt Sinner and vocalist Ralf Scheepers have been consistent and stalwart keepers of classic "keep it true" heavy metal. Today, they return with their 15th studio album, Domination, featuring long time guitarist and producer Magnus Karlsson, and introducing new players Andre Hilgers (Iron Allies, Silent Force, Sonic Haven) on drums and Thalia Bellazecca (Angus McSix) on second guitar (That's the young lady behind the boys in the picture).
Commenting on the recording, Matt Sinner recalled, "We've entered the studio and we can choose from a pool of about 25 songs! We're absolutely happy!" Scheepers added, "I haven't felt as great in a long time as I did singing some of the new songs!" Karlsson enthused, "I can't wait to hit the stage with Primal Fear again! It's going to be an incredible ride! We're going to create something truly special together, both live and in the studio, and I'm so grateful to share this journey with all you metalheads! Metal is forever!"
Simply summarized, Domination is classic Primal Fear: twin-guitar driven heavy power metal with epic arrangement, soaring vocals, gallop and groove in the rhythm section, catchy hooks in refrains and, of course, terrific guitar solos. Honestly, even with 13 songs packed into one hour, every one is terrific. Here's some highlights.
You get some traditional heavy power metal with The Hunter, Destroyer, Heroes And Gods, and Tears Of Fire. Something more heavy, steady, and with solid rock arrives with The Dead Don't Die. In the middle of the album is the instrumental Hallucinations which merges in seven minute metal anthem, Eden. To finish, Primal Fear throws a curve with the epic metal ballad A Tune I Won't Forget.
All said, Domination, finds Germany's Primal Fear in excellent form, delivering their constant and consistent, energetic and entertaining "keep it true" epic, twin-guitar driven, heavy power metal. Up the irons! Easily recommended.
