Ginevra: Beyond Tomorrow

Melodic Metal Rock
4.5/5.0

Thirty months from their debut album, We Belong To The Stars, Swedish supergroup Ginevra returns with their sophomore follow-up, Beyond Tomorrow. Encouraged by Frontiers head honcho Serafino Perugino, Kristian Fyhr (Seventh Crystal) created the band to feature his songwriting skills and vocal talent. To that end, Fyhr was joined by guitarist Magnus Karlsson (The Ferrymen, Primal Fear), bassist Jimmy Jay (H.E.A.T.), and drummer Magnus Ulfstedt (ex-Eclipse, Nordic Union).

Ginevra

Fyher shared these comments about the recording and possible lyrical themes: The whole album covers a higher cause without being Biblical or political. We are all meant to bring the best of what we have into daily situations and life. We have approximately eighty years to leave a mark here on Earth, so we better make it count. Indeed. We could all work for a better, peaceful world.

Musically, Beyond Tomorrow follows the motif established in their first release: the perfect intersection of classic melodic hard rock, melodic metal edge, and AOR accessibility. Fyhr's fine songwriting and vocal skills are only made better by the rest the band's contributions. Especially, when you add in Karlsson's equally formidable songwriting and production talents, and those killer guitar solos.

Speaking to some songs, first, I would direct your listening ears to the four (!) music videos in this review, if only to point to some contrast and versatility in the album's songwriting. By example: Moonlight comes off as a sharp rocker with a metal edge, while True North turns more upon an AOR accessible groove. And so goes the album. Similar to Moonlight are Wild Ones, Higher, and Samurai. Similar to True North for some AOR-ish melodic metal are Echoes Of The Lonely and Lightning Roses. But, ultimately, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, the intersection of genres is tightly woven and nearly flawless.

All things considered, for a second effort, Ginevra's Beyond Tomorrow delivers another fine recording of their terrific melodic metal rock infused with radio-friendly AOR accessibility, and some really excellent guitar chops from Magnus Karlsson. Easily recommended.
