Celebrating his 74th birthday only a few weeks ago, the legendary and iconic "voice of rock," Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple, solo, numerous collaborations, et al) returns with his 15th and latest solo album, Chosen, in a career that covers nearly 50 years. I hope when I hit that age, I'm still kicking ass and taking names. Hughes commented on Chosen: "Songwriting is deeply personal to me, and l generally write and record when I have something to say. It's been nine years since I recorded my last solo album, Resonate. There have been recordings and collaborations with other artists, since 2016".
He adds, "When writing Chosen, I went back to my life drawing board, writing about the human condition, love, hope, faith and acceptance. I write about how I feel on the inside and not externally. My life is lived from within, in the present moment. It's an album of soul food, and I've never been so grateful, right here, on planet earth. Music is the healer!"
My last visit with a Glenn Hughes album was 2008's First Underground Nuclear Kitchen (aka FuNK) where the vocalist and bass player was experimenting with funk-infused hard rock. I was not impressed. Seventeen years on, with Chosen brings Hughes back to his more familiar somewhat bluesy hard and heavy rock. I wouldn't necessarily call the songs heavy metal, but it's damn close. There's heavy, thick, and fuzzed out riffs, an even heavier, often plodding, rhythm section, and swollen guitar solos. Hughes sings his ass off but can often be barely heard over the din and density of the music. Do I have some highlights or favorites? Perhaps more the former, like songs that had a more palatable rock groove: Hot Damn Thing, Chosen, Heal, and Into The Fade.
All in all, Glenn Hughes' Chosen finds the legendary "voice of rock" belting it out like its 1975 with this album of blues-tinged, hard and heavy, fuzzed out rock. At 74, he's still kicking ass, and taking names. Recommended.
