Laurenne/Louhimo: Falling Through Stars

Melodic Metal Rock/AOR
4.5/5.0

Laurenne/Louhimo is the collaboration between Finnish vocalists Noora Louhimo (Battle Beast) and Netta Laurenne (Smackbound). Coming from the same hometown, and sharing similar musical influence, their partnership began in the midst of the COVID pandemic. The dropped their debut album, The Reckoning, in 2021, produced by Laurenne's husband Nino (Hevisaurus, Thunderstone) and featuring a host of Finnish guest musician. Now Noora and Netta return with their sophomore album, Falling Through Stars.

Noora Louhimo and Netta Laurenne

Netta Laurenne commented: Falling Through Stars gave us the opportunity to step in and out of our comfort zones to meet halfway ... This album takes us on a journey through both the past and future of metal. We've aimed to incorporate styles, instruments, and emotions spanning from the '70s to the present day. It's a dynamic album that showcases both raw power and delicate moments ....

Having never heard their first album, but knowing both of their other bands, I wasn't sure what to expect with this duet's musical direction. Battle Beast is power metal; Smackbound mostly modern metal rock. Laurenne/Louhimo isn't really either one, but more melodic metal rock, an intersection of classic hard rock and metal with AOR accessibility. And, the result is pretty terrific. Of course, the focus of the songwriting is vocal harmony and melody between the two women.

Speaking to some songs, you'll find some true melodic metal rock with Let The Light Be Free, Falling Through Stars, and To The Dark. Alternatively, the gals can mix things up All For Sale, The Cradle, or Loud And Clear which turn more upon AOR melodic hard rock. These songs also highlight how these vocalists are completely made for this musical partnership, like twins separated at birth now coming together to make great music. The closing number, the largely acoustic David Bowie and Clyde, makes this even more self-evident (though I don't know who Clyde refers to).

All said, Falling Through Stars showcases the vocal talents of Noora Louhimo and Netta Laurenne and how their voices mesh so delightfully within album that sways between melodic metal rock and AOR accessible melodic hard rock. Easily recommended.
