To paraphrase late night talk show host David Lettermen, my next artist needs little introduction. Germany's Helloween are practically the godfathers of traditional European power metal. This year they will the 40th anniversary of their debut album, Walls Of Jericho, wherein the will also advance on an epic globe spanning tour. Meanwhile, after four years,a most recent DVD Live At Budokan, and a 40th anniversary compilation album, septet delivers a new studio album, Giants & Monsters. Founding members guitarists Kai Hansen and Michael Weikath with vocalist Andi Deris describe the band's songwriting process for the new album:
What keeps motivating us is the fact that we're extremely different. That generates suspense and creative energy, explains Weikath, and if problems do occur, we connect through our passion and our sense of humor. We try not to take ourselves and everything around us too seriously, adds Hansen, before Deris concludes, In the end, we're just seven guys who want to make music and enjoy the incomparable force that arises when we're together. Helloween is way more powerful than the sum of its parts.
With total honesty, I can once more say that I cannot approach any Helloween with unbiased objectivity. I'm a huge fan of the band and their trademark, traditional and consistent, epic power metal, and that with two vocalists and a triple guitar attack. That classic power metal gallop and groove abounds with Majestic, Universe (Gravity For Hearts), Giants On The Run, and We Can Be Gods. Alternatively, Helloween never fails at giving fans some catchy melodic heavy metal rock with A Little Is A Little To Much, Under The Moonlight, and This Is Tokyo. Into The Sun is definitely a power metal anthem where the vocal arrangement plays the greatest part. What more can I say? This classic Helloween.
All in all, 40 years and still going strong, Helloween's Giants & Monsters proves that they are the godfathers and legends of power metal who still set the bar for the genre. Quite recommended.
