Mighty High: Legalize Tre Bags
Mighty High - Legalize Tre Bags Review

Mighty High: Legalize Tre Bags

Heavy/Stoner/Punk Rock
3.5/5.0

Let's add a few things up. The band name is Mighty High. The album title is Legalize Tre Bags (it's their second by the way). The first song is the quite short I Don't Wanna Listen to Yes, or more properly, as sung, 'I don't wanna f*cking listen to Yes. Yes sucks.' And, oh yeah, every song has some reference to marijuana. See where I'm going with this?

Now add the simple fact that Mighty High proudly affirms that there are 'no ballads, no keyboards, and no acoustic guitar.' There sound is nearly totally retro, combining classic melodic heavy rock with the anger and urgency of older punk and bits of psychedelic. Then add the weed angle, and Legalize Tre Bags, as heard through guitarist/vocalist Chris 'Woody High' MacDermott, could be generalized as simply angry stoner rock.

Conversely, and perhaps more fundamentally, Mighty High is a rock band. They're loud and brash, gritty and raw, rude and vulgar. But they rock, and quite well at that, especially in the guitar work. Their garage sound and DIY ethic comes through like thunder in the wee hours of the morning. Songs of note are Chemical Warpigs, Drug War, Cheap Beer Dirt Weeed (yes, that's how the spelled it), and Speedcreep. Funniest song is, of course, the aforementioned I Don't Wanna Listen to Yes. But, if they're not careful the beginning of High on the Cross could push them towards ballad material.

Do like your rock heavy, raw, and more than a little bit retro? Then Brooklyn's Mighty High and Legalize Tre Bags is right for you. Get the vinyl addition so you de-seed and roll your own bones. Recommended.
