If a metal band had a battle ostrich as a mascot, would you take them seriously? Well, it appears that Swedish retro traditional heavy metal band, Lancer, has one, complete with a metal studded leather collar. Think I'm kidding? Visit their website.
With their self-titled full-length debut, Lancer warps us back to 1983 echoing the great Iron Maiden with more than a few hints of Helloween, Hammerfall, and Edguy. Frankly, regarding that latter band, several songs here, like Young & Alive and Seventh, could have appeared on an early Edguy album. More akin to Iron Maiden are songs like The Exiled and Between the Devil and the Deep.
Additionally, vocalist Isak Stenvall sounds like an intersection between Sammet and Dickinson. Actually, he looks much like the latter in his early days, only with a lot more hair. All this is bolstered by some very well-written and arranged songs and solid musicianship, not the least of which is Lancer's twin guitar leads.
Fundamentally, if you love those great years when Maiden was at their height, you will love Lancer's traditional melodic heavy metal. Solid stuff, and strongly recommended.
