It was bound to happen. Luca Turilli, the Italian master of self-proclaimed cinematic metal, returns with another Rhapsody project, Prometheus Symphonia Ignis Divinus. Of course, Turilli does nothing small or half way. Seven months of production, three months of recording, two choirs (only two!), and a few guest vocalist including Primal Fear's Ralf Scheepers make for another Rhapsody epic.
And at this point all that's left to do is whip out your Thesaurus and start puking out a bevy of adjectives. In other words, if you know Turilli and Rhapsody you know exactly what his cinematic metal is and what to expect from this album. Grandiose. Bombastic. Symphonic. Operatic. Outrageous. Total f*ckin' over-the-top symphonic power metal. Yup. Need I say more?
Well maybe. First of all, noting the song titles, then adding the density of the vocal and choral arrangements, I'm not sure it some of these songs are in English. Could be Italian for all I can tell. Also, it's not all orchestration, choirs, and Turilli burning of solos. Within the latter third of One Ring To Rule Them All, for example, there's a nice celtic/folk breakdown. Similar, King Solomon and the 72 Names has a bit of a Middle Eastern touch right before the five minute mark. Additionally, for the operatic angle, Notturno scores with the male/female tag team vocal arrangement. Of course, what would a Turilli Rhapsody album be without some lengthy epic song? Largely a disappointment is the answer. But the closing Of Michael The Archangel And Lucifer’s Fall Part II: Codex Nemesis, long title and all, fills your need for more cinematic metal musical drama, and that's over 18 minutes of drama. (As a side thought: it reminded me a lot of Wagner.) Do you need to know more? Probably not. Luca Turilli's Prometheus Symphonia Ignis Divinus is cinematic metal. Pompous and outrageous is it may be, it's power to overwhelm cannot be denied.
