The first thing you might notice about England's Voodoo Vegas is that there's nothing ordinary about them. From their name to the title and album art of their second long player, Freak Show Candy Floss to their stage presence, this band enjoys walking on the wild side. But then you spin their tunes and, while not ordinary, the Voodoo Vegas sound is quite familiar.
As American baseball legend Yogi Berra once said, "It's deja vu all over again." It's the Rocky Horror Picture Show repeating, "Let's do the time warp again." Yeah, Voodoo Vegas is a jump back to Eighties melodic hard rock with a metal edge, a sleaze vibe, and a punk sneer. Yet you could also drop in a little blues groove with songs like Poison and Lady Divine, where front man Lawrence Case whips out his harmonica. In some sense they remind me of Aerosmith and GnR with a little Poison.
If anything this album rocks hard, largely from the twin guitar riffage: the licks and leads are substantial, sharp, and furious throughout. They, in turn, are emboldened and embellished by a powerful rhythm section where the thundering groove of the bass line is undeniable. Some of the strongest statements of this come with Backstabber, Killing Joke, and Walk Away. Yet Voodoo Vegas has a softer side with one song, Sleeping In the Rain, which is mostly driven by voice and acoustic guitar (and also demonstrates the band's solid command of vocal harmonies).
Suffice to say Voodoo Vegas' Freak Show Candy Floss is a strong second showing for the band, proving once more that classic hard rock is alive and viable. Recommended.
