How many bands do you know that have had same original band members for thirteen years? Personnel changes in bands is basically the norm, not the exception. Yet Italy's Waste Pipes have going steady with the same five dudes since 2003. That alone is rather impressive. Now they arrive with their third album, Fake Mistake.
You can probably drop Waste Pipes into the category of melodic hard rock, drawing easily from classic rock with an independent spirit all the same. After this, the next thing I heard was a strong guitar presence, with two guitar players. The riffs are brisk and harmonious, the solos clean and vigorous. Many songs, like Fire Below, Stay The Night, and The Loser Song, are lead by the guitar line right from the start. Also notable is the vocal arrangement. Vocalist Chris has a clean presence, harmonious, yet with some gusto and passion. When joined by others, as with Stay The Night or The Loser Song, the vocals get a deeper boost.
After these things, two things leap from the songs: groove and accessibility. These song rock with AOR catchiness. They have hooks from the guitar lines to melody to arrangements to catchy lyrical refrains which keep you connected. Some songs are heavier like The Loser Song or Little Devils Scratched My Ears. Others put the groove on speed, with the fast tempo of For All The Time We Waste and Not Enough, though that song has some slower segues. I'll admit, at first spin, I wasn't to keen on the first and last songs, Headstrong and Bad Growing, respectively. The former is a great guitar song, but I couldn't understand the vocals. The latter song, at five minutes, seemed laborious in it's arrangement and plodding in it's pace. It simply didn't really rock like the other songs. Waste Pipes is definitely better when the attack with their guitars and groove in a three minute song. Nevertheless, Fake Mistake is still solid and entertaining, keenly guitar-driven, alt/indie melodic hard rock. Check them out. Recommended.
