Italy's DGM hasn't released a live DVD since 2010's Synthesis. With this year's Passing Stages Live in Milan and Atlanta, the band has doubled down on their bet by offering two live recordings. Call it, The Tale of Two Concerts: Milan in 2016, Atlanta in 2014. Mostly we need to highlight the similarities and differences between the two.
First and foremost, there's no disputing the clarity of the video or sound, the band's performance or musicianship, or their enthusiastic engagement with the audience. For instance, camera angles give you an up close and personal view of the show, perhaps better than an audience member would get, especially from the cheap seats. Additionally, in each show, vocalist Marco Basile coaxes, cajoles, and prods the crowd for response. He's a fine vocalist and an enthusiastic and animated showman. Also similar within each show, graphic titles reveal the names for each song, a smart addition.
As for some differences, the Milan show for the Frontiers Metal Festival features a set list centered around DGM's most recent album The Passage, which makes obvious sense. For the Prog Power set list, the emphasis is upon the Frame (2009) and Momentum (2013) albums, from the latter tour. Another thing you might notice of the Atlanta show is the minimalist staging provided for all the bands. Also, in that year, Marco Basile has something of a scruffy beard started. That observation was just for grins. Another difference between the two shows is that, Basile speaks to the audience almost entirely in his native Italian at the Milan show. I get that. Italian audience, Italian words. But the DVD is being released to an international, English is the lingua franca these days.
Nevertheless, with a concert DVD, first and foremost, you want the experience of being part of a live show, and you get that with DRM's Passing Stages Live in Milan and Atlanta. DGM delivers fine and enthusiastic performances for each show. Easily recommended. A video from each show is found below.
