Wayward Sons is a new band formed by singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Toby Jepson. You may recall him as the vocalist for UK's Little Angels and the Scottish band Gun. As a producer Jepson has worked with The Answer, Saxon, and Fastway, among others.
What you have with Wayward Sons is melodic heavy rock that reaches back to the Seventies and early Eighties, yet sounds perfectly relevant for today. You might hear a sound that reminds of Thin Lizzy in the past and The Answer or Inglorious in the present. It's a rollicking and rocking sound built with large and sharp, yet harmonious, twin guitar riffage, fret burning guitar solos, a deep and groovy rhythm section, and Jepson's powerful vocal presence. More significantly, his voice carries the melody and harmony in every song, even as much as the guitars. While Jepson has a natural rhythm for this, the vocal arrangements are equally as powerful. So also is the bass line which is well heard in each song, notable in Be Still and I Don't Wanna Go. Additionally, Jepson's intention with Wayward Sons was to build a band ready to play live. To do so, all the songs for this album were recorded live in the studio. This production gives the whole album both a vibrant and warm feeling.
After these things, the songs within Ghosts Of Yet To Come basically rock, turning on the aforementioned rhythm and groove, but also crafty and catchy, hooks in melody and refrains. With the previously mentioned Be Still and I Don't Wanna Go, which are killer catchy songs, Alive, Crush, and Until The End are vigorous, groovy, and memorable rockers. For something heavier and more forceful, especially in the riffage and bottom end, look to Give It Away or Killing Time. With Something Wrong you might hear a scant blues groove wandering through the arrangement.
All in all, Wayward Sons' Ghosts Of Yet To Come is an exciting and entertaining album of classic melodic heavy rock with terrific catchy tunes. Put it on your short list of albums to buy when you visit your favorite independent record store. Recommended.
