Dangerdog Music Review is always happy to review and promote new bands, especially when they arrive from our native Pennsylvania. Hailing from Philadelphia, Blazon Rite was created by guitarist and principal songwriter James Kirn, with a desire to combine NWoBHM and European power metal with Dungeons And Dragons mythology. The result is the four song EP, Dulce Bellum Inexpertis, released to the metal underground in early 2020. Roughly translated from the Latin as "war is sweet to those who have never experienced it" (cf. Pindar, Erasmus), the EP has been picked up by Italy's Cruz Del Sur Music for international distrbution.
Lyrically, the EP is a four-song conceptual story which "follows a man's transformation from a warrior pledged to an earthly cause to a wilderness wanderer to ultimately being a king on earth under the will of a mysterious horned demi-god." You can't get any more D&D or metal than that. Musically, Blazon Rite definitely accomplishes their goal of combining NWoBHM with power metal for an epic metal finish. This is self-evident at the start with The Warriors Choice which features orchestration and an approaching storm before leaping into sharp riffs, swift rhythm and groove, and brisk metal. For both Diamond Daggyr and Udug Hul, Kirn and crew pull you in with softer acoustic beginnings before erupting with both heaviness and power as riffs roar and guitar solos reach a frenzied crescendo. Alternatively, Into The Expanse can be distilled down to rip-roaring and razor sharp riffs and power metal gallop. All in all, offering listeners some classic NWoBHM inspired epic metal, Dulce Bellum Inexpertis is a fine and ambitious start for the young and upstart Blazon Rite. Fans of bands from Manilla Road to Blind Guardian should take notice. Recommended.
