Force Of Mortality: New Dark World

Heavy Metal
3.5/5.0

Formed a mere four years ago in Oxford, Force Of Mortality hit the ground running by dropping their debut five song EP Reincarnate The Immortal in 2017. Despite losing their lead guitarist the following year, the band, now a threesome, pressed on to begin recording their first full-length album. Largely a DIY effort and unsigned to a label, New Dark World will hit the digital media platforms next week.

Force Of Mortality

Citing influences old and new, diverse and different, such as Metallica, Bolt Thrower, Paradise Lost, and obscure English thrash band Xentrix, Force Of Mortality (FoM) plays hard and heavy metal. After a spin or so, some musical elements become self-evident: an abundance of sharp riffage, a thick and heavy rhythm section where the bass has a strong presence, and some spry guitar solos. These things are then wrapped in arrangements where the tempo can vary from steady to speedy with a notable rock groove rising underneath.

You'll hear all these elements congeal within Driver, The Fall, Born To Fire, or the bass-driven Eponymous. Alternatively, a song such as Divided Nation has a near doomish quality with its thick riffs and tough rhythm section wrapped in a sluggish thumping pace, at least in the first half. In the latter half, the pace begins to hasten to the finishing short guitar solo. Somewhat similar, Hades has a fitting heavy, dark, and foreboding musical character. Yet, the song is marked by some terrific drum work and several sharp guitar solos. The album finishes with Even Badder, an ambitious extended instrumental which features the musical strengths of all players in an arrangement that finds FoM flirting with progressive metal.

All in all, Force Of Mortality's New Dark World offers metal fans a new century interpretation of classic heavy metal with some interesting and entertaining results. Check it out and support the band.
