Few band can say they've been making music together for nearly 40 years. Yet, with intermittent breaks, such is the case for Swedish underground metal band Mindless Sinner. Their revival album, 2015's The New Messiah, was well-received by fans, and the band found themselves playing the Keep It True XVIII festival in April 2015. The show was recorded and released as a live set, Keeping It True, in 2018. Now the band returns with a brand new studio long-player, Poltergeist.
Cutting to the chase, Mindless Sinner's heavy metal is easily defined. The band delivers a hybrid of NWoBHM and classic power metal. Expect the usual suspects in their Scandi heavy metal: twin guitars for riff harmony and soaring leads, plenty of galloping rock groove from the rhythm section, and vocalist Christer Goransson delivering strong and clean vocals, with the other fellows backing him up with gang bgvs. It's a familiar formula, but also one tried and true, and Mindless Sinner nails it. Overall, being a guitar guy, I enjoyed the twin guitar harmony and vibrant solos.
For a taste of the songs, you'll find some true power metal gallop and groove with Poltergeist, Rewind The Future, and Hammer Of Thor. Mindless Sinner turns up the rock rhythm and groove in their metal within World Of Madness and the metal riff rocker, Roll The Dice. With Valkyrie and Altar Of The King, Mindless Sinner dials things back for more heavy and steady metal. All in all, with Poltergeist, Mindless Sinner has delivered another strong album of guitar-driven, keep it true, heavy metal. Easily recommended.
