Unruly Child: Our Glass House

AOR Melodic Hard Rock
4.0/5.0

American rock band Unruly Child continues to ride the crest of the musical wave since reuniting in 2009. The core of the band remains intact with Marcie Free on vocals, Bruce Gowdy on guitars and vocals, Guy Allison offering keyboards, percussion, and vocals. Jay Schellen once more handles the drumming. Our Glass House is Unruly Child's ninth studio album and features guest and notable bass player Tony Franklin (The Firm, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and more.)

Unruly Child

Once more, with Our Glass House we find Unruly Child delivering their classic and catchy AOR melodic hard rock. Their songs always boast strong song melody and vocal harmony, upbeat and sometimes swift rock rhythm and groove, light synth embellishment, impressive guitar lines, and catchy choruses. Across the album, I found Gowdy's riffs to be somewhat more sharp, even heavier at times, as within The Wooden Monster, Say What You Want, or Everyone Loves You When You're Dead. That last song was a personal favorite, if only for the cocky, tongue-in-cheek chorus. Within the lightly swifter rocker Underwater, I enjoyed how Gowdy's rhythmic riffs rode along with the groove of the rhythm section. Being a lead guitar fan, I also found his solos to be quite smashing throughout. The aforementioned Underwater along with other songs such as Freedom Is A Fight and Say What You Want really brought out Franklin's smooth bass work. Other notable songs include Talked You Out Of Lovin Me and Catch Up To Yesterday which, to these ears, had a latent blues groove underneath, and Marcie Free was sounding positively soulful. As a bonus, the album offers new versions of To Be Your Everything and Let's Talk About Love from their 1992 self-titled debut album. All in all, Unruly Child's Our Glass House is another consistent and entertaining album of their essential AOR melodic rock. Recommended.
