I've followed Edge Of Paradise's career with some interest since their 201l independent debut release, Mask. Several more EPs and long-players have appeared over the last 10 years. Also, the core of the band remains constant, consisting of vocalist and keyboard player Margarita Monet and guitarist Dave Bates. Now the band returns with their latest and fourth studio album, The Unknown, produced by Howard Benson (Halestorm, Seether, Black Stone Cherry, etc.) and featuring new members drummer Jamie Moreno and bassist Ricky Bonazza.
For the uninitiated, Edge Of Paradise (EoP) varies little from their musical formula. While not necessarily difficult to define, the EoP sound is a mash up of several genres. The underlying foundation is largely melodic metal with plenty of hard rock groove. The tough riffs can account for the former; the deft song composition and spry rhythm section for the latter. Then you can toss in three more elements: symphonic, industrial, and dance rock. The use of keyboards, lively trance-like beats, and advanced dance rhythms make this possible. Yet not forgetting their metal and hard rock roots Bates can rip off some decent guitar solos. But between the groove and big industrial dance beats, they could be easily mixed. You'll hear many, if not all of these ingredients within You Touch You Die, The Unknown, My Method Your Madness, which also has an industrial remix as a bonus track. While still intense in rhythm, False Idols moves more upon fast-pace melodic metal driven by beefy riffs and an aggressive rhythm section. All said, and simply, The Unknown is characteristically consistent Edge Of Paradise, delivering melodic metal with plenty of rock grove, industrial rhythms, and dance beats. If you liked anything from their past catalog, you will dig this. Recommended.
