Pumpkinheads rejoice! What began in 2016 with guitarist Kai Hansen and vocalist Michael Kiske rejoining Helloween as Pumpkinheads United, continues in 2021 with the new self-titled Helloween studio album. It comes on the heels of the massive Pumpkins United World Tour and the ensuing CD/DVD release which commemorates the event. Known as one of the grand progenitors of European melodic power metal, Helloween finds the band in fine form.
Honestly, this recording is rather massive, 12 songs over 68 minutes, and quite entertaining. There's something for every Helloween and power metal fan across this album. The septet pulls out all the quintessential genre stops: gallop and groove, thunder in the rhythm section, soaring vocals and vocal harmony, catchy refrains and, of course, blazing guitar solos. You like your power metal fast and heavy? Then dig these rousing tunes: Cyanide, Rise Without Chains, or Indestructible. What else is power metal but bombastic? You get that with Out Of The Glory's bold start, brisk pacing, and deliberate bass line. Alternatively, while still fast and heavy, Best Time lays down the rock groove for a shorter catchy romp. But then there's Robot King, raging in its speed and riff intensity. Of course, the epic song is the concluding Skyfall, 12 minutes of progressive power metal to make any genre snob sit up and pump their fist. All in all, and simply said, Helloween is everything we love and expect from Helloween, our pumpkinhead brothers in metal. Up the irons. Helloween has once more raised the bar. Quite recommended.
