Rising from the ashes of LA's Gang Of Souls is Land Of Gypsies, presenting veteran rocker Terry Ilous on vocals, founder of XYZ and formerly of Great White, and producer and bass player Fabrizio Grossi, known for his work with Glenn Hughes, Supersonic Blues Machine, Eric Gales, among others. The band also features well-known session musician Eric Ragno on keyboards and from Supersonic Blues Machine, Serge Simic on guitar.
Once more in capsule: Land Of Gypsies plays classic rock which finds its roots in yesteryear's melodic heavy rock from the Seventies which, in turn, was often infused with plenty of blues feeling and groove. The characteristics of the song arrangements are self-evident: riffs that are strong and assertive (but not so sharp or caustic), a rhythmic section that lays down a deep groove driven by powerful bass work, an earthy texture of Hammond organ, and topped off by energetic lean guitar solos. All these things are wrapped up in underlying blues groove and tempered by Ilous' soulful vocals with fine accompanying vocal harmony. Really, there's nothing "new" here; this is not alt rock or modern rock or some attempt to turn classic rock music on it's head. Nope. Land Of Gypsies plays organic, nearly roots revival, classic and melodic heavy rock. They're what Inglorious hoped to be and may still be with their next album. My favorite tracks: Trouble, Rambling Man, Shattered, Believe, and the groovy rocker Somewhere Down The Line. Breakout your tie-dye shirts and bell-bottoms and rock out classic heavy rock style with Land Of Gypsies. Recommended.
