Michael Schenker has had an extraordinary musical career: from his humble, youthful, beginnings in Scorpions to near global success with UFO to various group and solo projects and lately, the significant success of Michael Schenker Fest. Indeed, the guitar wizard has seen and lived it all. And has influenced many aspiring guitarist past, present, and future. Now Schenker celebrates his 50 years of musical history and living by revisiting his roots via his iconic group MSG.
Immortal reminds us of many things including Schenker's strength as a songwriter and innovative guitarist with the ability to deliver a guitar-forward, yet immensely and accessible, melodic hard rock song. It also shows his appreciation for talented, similar minded, musicians especially vocalists of various styles. Immortal features and reunites Schenker with friends Gary Barden, Robin McAuley, Doogie White, Joe Lynn Turner, but also with relatively new to the metal scene, Ronnie Romero.
The only thing left to do is to consider the songs or, better, if possible, pick some favorites. A very difficult thing to do. As a long time Schenker fan, I never tire of his song craftsmanship and the ensuing guitar work. His riffs and leads roar with Drilled To Kill, Sail The Darkness, and Don't Die On Me Now. Yet, for his guitar work, I'm fond of Schenker's longer, extended play as within After The Rain or In Search Of Peace Of Mind. Alternatively, when it comes for vocal choices I prefer the songs where the voice is smoother and more melodic as with After The Rain, but also the terrific AOR-like fast rocker, The Queen Of Thorns And Roses. All in all, MSG's Immortal both demonstrates and celebrates Michael's 50 year musical career and impressive, innovative guitar talent. And I'm sure there's more to come. Easily recommended.
