Is it too soon to call the hits of Night Ranger "golden oldies?" Nearly 40 years on, radio smashing tunes like (You Can Still) Rock In America, Sister Christian, and Don't Tell Me You Love Me echo within the halls of classic rock. Night Ranger, the veterans of the torn denim jeans and Aqua Net hair days of the Eighties, continue to tour and record to delight of their 50-something and older fans. The quintet returns with their lucky 13th studio album, ATBPO: And The Band Play On, a reference to surviving the ongoing COVID19 pandemic.
Night Ranger's musical style needs little description for classic rock fans, because that's exactly what it is: classic and timeless melodic hard rock wrapped in AOR radio-friendly accessibility and prepped for arena-ready play. Bang your head, tap your toes, and fire up your butane lighter (or cell phone in this modern age.) The band has always written with strong emphasis on vocal harmony, rock rhythm and groove, catchy refrains, and stylish guitar solos. Notable, of course, is also the power of Jack Blades bass in many songs such as A Lucky Man or Coming For You in a bass solo that introduces the guitar solo.
To consider a few more tunes, you'll find Night Ranger giving fans some strength and speed with Breakout, Monkey, or Coming For You. Then the band pushes the envelope of catchy and upbeat rock rhythm groove with Hard To Make It Easy with some fine piano lingering about. Or Bring It All Home To Me where Night Ranger's vocal arrangement in the chorus sweetens the riff rocker. What would classic rock be without a ballad? Night Ranger offers listeners The Hardest Road, a rising anthem complete with requisite soaring guitar solo. Most things considered, 2021 finds Night Ranger in prime form and ATBPO delivering some satisfying classic AOR melodic hard rock. Easily recommended. Get it.
