If you follow the German metal underground you are no doubt familiar with Rezet. Active since 2004, the band has been remarkable for its leadership by founder, vocalist, and guitarist Ricky Wagner, but also its revolving door of personnel and uneven musical output. Now, following the success of 2019's Deal With It! and a stable lineup, Rezet returns with their fifth studio album, Truth In Between.
This is my first experience with Rezet and it's been an interesting one. Musically speaking, Rezet is a traditional heavy metal which also blurs the line between speed and thrash metal. Their songs are characterized by sharp and savage twin guitar riffage, restless tempos, a thumping rhythm section, generous, fast, and frenzied guitar solos, raw and assertive vocals, and lyrical themes critical of socio-political and culture currents. You'll find these musical motifs within songs such as Deceived By Paradise, Truth In Between, Jailpit, (Un)certain Crimes, and Back For No Good. All songs are rather raging and intense, made even more so by Wagner's angry vocals. Equally savage is Half A Century with features ex-Burning Witches guitarist Sonia Anubis.
Alternatively, Rezet can slip into some traditional metal with more moderate tempos and some (subtle) rock groove with Populate Delete Repeat and I'm Not Gonna Stop. Even less thrash and rage is Never Satisfied, a sharp melodic metal tune nearing an anthem with spry guitar work. Then there's the almost absolutely mellow metal, in comparison to the whole album, of Infinite End featuring some lighter electric guitar work and Wagner's dialed back vocals. However, it does get more feverish and heavy in the latter half. Oh well. Old habits die hard. But those two songs were the most interesting of the lot for this listener.
Most things considered, Rezet's Truth In Between offers metal fans a contemporary and interesting interpretation of classic heavy metal infused with speedy thrash metal influences and an abundance of strong guitar work. If that sounds good to you, you will probably enjoy the band and album. Check out the video below. Support the band.
