Second Reign: Gravity

Melodic Metal Rock
4.0/5.0

Arriving from Sweden, Second Reign is a new band, yet founded by veterans of the music business. Created around 2017 Second Reign established a simple goal: reviving and recreating Eighties melodic hard rock for the current times. After working independently and cooperatively during a worldwide pandemic, Second Reign delivers their debut effort, Gravity, a large and long album of 13 songs.

Generally, across this album, Second Reign has accomplished their goal. Gravity is definitely a throwback, Eighties style musical extravagance in the best of that tradition. But I would likely add that there's a strong metal edge to their tunes. A large number of their songs can be simply described as fast and heavy, including Fire, Uninvited, The Truth, and Another Night. That latter song brings up more of the band's keyboard presence. Alternatively, Falling turns more AOR melodic hard rock and Borderline is a piano-driven, more heavy, power ballad Then again, with a strong keyboard presence both You'll Never Catch Me and Uncover can be fast and heavy. Yet the best song here, and my favorite, is the AOR rocker Home, something more smooth and accessible with an awesome saxophone solo before the finish. That songs shows some real creative promise for the band. All in all, Gravity is simply a strong debut for the band, offering fans a heaping helping of melodic metal rock with plenty of AOR accessibility. Recommended.
