Fortune made a splash in the AOR melodic hard rock pool with their revival album II in 2019. The classic rock band founded by brothers Richard (guitar) and Mick (drums) Fortune hadn't dropped a studio album in nearly 35 years. But the new album was quickly discovered by genre fans and album reviewers alike. Now the band returns with their follow-up album, Level Ground, once more on the Frontiers Music label.
Essentially, Level Ground is a continuation of their previous album wherein AOR melodic hard rock rules the day. The same musical elements continue: vivid song melody and harmony notable in the vocal and guitar arrangements, tight rhythm and groove that accentuates the bass line, and crisp guitar solos. While quite evident within II, the keyboard seem even more present across the album. This is specific within I Should Have Known You'd Be Trouble, Silence Of The Heart, Orphaned In The Storm, or Riot In The Heartland, but evident elsewhere. Perhaps not in the same presence or density as a Toto song, but strong nontheless. Speaking of Toto, Steve Porcaro guests on piano and keyboards for the ballad, I Will Hold You Up. Another ballad follows later with Hand In Hand. Swift riff rockers arrive with both Level Ground and Dangerous Things, something more heavy steady rock with Judgement Day. These things also illuminate the significance of the bass line throughout. Most things considered, Fortune's Level Ground cements the band's historic comeback with another dynamic and entertaining album of classic AOR melodic had rock. Very recommended.
