New Swedish band Ginevra is another new project from vocalist and songwriter Kristian Fyhr. Another project because, Fyher brought us Seventh Crystal, an AOR melodic hard rock band which released their debut album Delirium in 2021. Fyhr began writing songs for future Frontiers's projects wherein the label prez Serafino Perugino suggested he create a band/project which revolved around his new musical directon as represented by the song My Rock n Roll.
This evolved into the creation of Ginevra which features more Swedish talent, including guitarist Magnus Karlsson (The Ferrymen, Primal Fear), bassist Jimmy Jay (H.E.A.T.), and drummer Magnus Ulfstedt (ex-Eclipse, Nordic Union). The involvement of Magnus Karlsson was enough for me to sit up and take notice. He's one of my favorite guitarists (besides also being a great songwriter and producer.) The project also involves help from Frontiers stalwart porducer Alessandro Del Vecchio (also on keyboards) and another newcomer vocalist Chez Kane (who has her sophomore album, Passion, coming next month).
Ginerva, then, is something a departure from Fyhr's Seventh Crystal. Musically, it turns more upon melodic metal rock. The songs are mostly fast, heavy, and driven by powerful hard rock groove (and some power metal gusto). With songs written by a vocalist, the songs are are lush with melodic vocals and harmonious vocal arrangements. Mentioning Karlsson again, the talented guitarist delivers epic riffs and fandamntastic guitar solos. There's a touch of keyboard through out, typically symphonic or atmospheric for accent. Within this mixture, Fyhr's AOR influence is not forgotten. It's heard mostly in song melody and vocal harmony but also in more subtle moments. Like the piano breakdown within Unbreakable or the vocal segue within Masquerade with Chez Kane. As to the aforementioned My Rock n Roll, which was the impetus for the project, it's an anthemic, rising ballad that crosses boundaries between AOR rock and melodic metal. Otherwise, the straight up metal rock arrives with Siren's Calling, The Fight, We Belong To The Stars, and Apologize.
Most things accounted for, Ginevra's debut We Belong To The Stars is entertaining and satisfying musical adventure into the realms of melodic metal rock with more than a few AOR influences. And it's got Magnus Karlsso on guitar. Nuff said. Recommended.
