House Of Lords: Saints And Sinners

Melodic Hard Rock/AOR
4.0/5.0

Classic rock band House Of Lords needs little introduction to fans of the genre. Formed wayback in 1987 by Angel member Gregg Giuffria, the band galloped from the gate with two highly successful albums, 1988's House Of Lords and the popular 1990 follow-up Sahara. The advent of grunge put a damper on future work but the band rebound in 2000, only to have Giuffria leave the band some years later. Since then, vocalist James Christian has remained at the helm. House Of Lords returns with their eleventh studio album, Saints And Sinners, featuring new members keyboard player Mark Mangold and drummer Johan Koleberg.

House Of Lords

With that brief synopsis, I'm not going to belabor this review with my usual verbosity. But, for those who have not encountered House Of Lords before, here's a simple description of their music. House Of Lords plays classic melodic hard rock wrapped in AOR accessibility. The principal ingredients are Christian's vocals and vocal arrangements. This followed by the genre's most well-known elements: rock rhythm and groove, song melody, and sin qua non guitar solos, then just drop in some keyboard for accent, atmosphere, and several solos. Fundamentally, Christian and House Of Lords are established masters at their craft, and Saints And Sinners is another fine and entertaining example of their talent. Top song picks, then, include Road Warrior, House Of The Lord, Roll Like Thunder, and the heavier Angels Fallen. There is one ballad. Avalanche is driven by three basic elements: Christian's voice, a piano melody, and symphonic synth atmosphere. Simply said, House Of Lord's Saints And Sinners is another consistent and entertaining album of their classic, AOR-driven, melodic hard rock with James Christian's strong vocals at the helm. Recommended. (Now, that was short, wasn't it?)
