Australian metal Ilium hasn't regaled my speakers since 2015's My Misanthropia. Nevertheless, the band, featuring guitarists Jason Hodges and Adam Smith, has been active. In 2017, they re-recorded their 2003 debut album, Sirens of the Styx. EPs appeared prior (Wendigo) and after (Enviro-Metal) this recording. With the latter, Ilium brought on guest musicians, vocalist Lord Tim and drummer Yatras. Finally, a new studio album, Carcinogeist, arrived in 2020. Now Ilium returns to the EP format with 2022's Quantum Evolution Event.
As an EP, Quantum Evolution Event contains a mere five songs. Which makes for a short review. But, damn, these are five stupendous songs of straight-up and classic heavy power metal. Moreover, each song is elegantly infused with terrific riffs and guitar harmony, assertive yet melodic, vocals, some groove and power metal speed, and an abundance of ballistic guitar solos (which essentially sells the EP). Not in a bad way, but there is little novelty here but, rather, sublime consistency of seasoned songwriting duo. Most songs are heavy and fast, then come the guitar solos; Mothcaste is really fast, pure power metal. A small twist comes with the piano and synths beginning Hostile Sky, yet these instruments yield to more guitar-driven heavy power metal. But that song and Undergods are also a fine example of Lord Tim's vocal harmony within the songs. All things considered, Ilium's Quantum Evolution Event EP is a consistent and compact offering of substantial and terrific guitar-driven (and melodic) heavy power metal. Find it at the Bandcamp link above. Easily recommended.
