Formed a mere four years or so ago, Sweden's Perfect Plan has made their mark on the classic rock genre with two fine studio albums: 2018's debut All Rise and 2020's follow up Time For A Miracle. The quintet's "plan" from the beginning was a simple one: create classic melodic hard rock delivered in an AOR wrapper. Totally off the mainstream musical current, Perfect Plan have become one of Europe's best representative of the genre.
Now, another two years later, Perfect Plan returns with their third long-player, significantly titled Brace For Impact. First thoughts were obvious ones. Perhaps Perfect Plan has decided to get heavier, maybe more melodic metal. Maybe. But not so much. The previous album bumped up the hard rock groove a notch, but nothing significantly blistering.Brace For Impact, however, falls in lock step with its predecessor
Sure, there are some "heavier" songs with some deeper groove and more punch like Devil's Got The Blues, Gotta Slow Me Down, Can't Let You Win, and Bring Me A Doctor. The latter two have some speed in the groove and some crisp assertive riffs. Yet these songs are not without their AOR elements: vocal harmony, rock groove, and catchy refrains. The AOR accessibility, however, is more prominent in If Love Walks In, Emelie, perhaps Stop The Bleed, though its a bit punchy too, and definitely My Angel, an obvious arena-ready ballad. Throughout the album you will find the two constants: Kent Hilli's melodic and strong (read: assertive at times) vocals and simply classic guitar solos.
Most things considered, Perfect Plan's Brace For Impact is simply another fine and consistently entertaining album of their classic AOR melodic hard rock. While I still think their first album is the best, this album will not disappoint fans of the band or genre. Easily recommended.
