Welcoming newcomers Poison Rose to the melodic hard rock scene requires some explanation. First, it's not necessarily a band (yet could be in the future), but rather a project that features, heretofore, rather unknown vocalist Marco Sivo. Never heard of him? Me neither. His last lead vocal gig was with Time Machine and their 2004 album Reviviscence. Since then he's been more a songwriter with clients such as Lovekillers and Geoff Tate's Sweet Oblivion. Yet, he still has some vocal credits, having done background spots with Hell In The Club and Secret Sphere. Now Frontiers Music has brought the vocalist back to the forefront with the Poison Rose project and debut album Little Bang Theory.
Musically, the Poison Rose project is basically a crossover: melodic hard rock merged with melodic metal. The music can be rich, heavy and dense, yet not without song melody and harmony. You get some strong guitar contributions from Aldo Lonobile (Secret Sphere, Edge Of Forever) and Andrea Seveso (Robin McAuley, Jorn) which makes many song huge riff rockers with blistering guitar solos. That's always a bonus.
But what about Sivo's vocal style. As constant Dangerdog Review readers know, after song melody and harmony and guitar solos, vocal arrangements are my thing (and you may have the same considerations). Sivo has an assertive, sometimes raw and gritty, presence, especially in the heavy and hard hitting tunes like Your Eyes Again, Set Us Free, or Older Now, by example. He kind of reminds me of Bryan Adams, if he went metal and also swallowed some roofing nails or drank too much Old Grand Dad. Yet, that is not the extent of Sivo's vocal character. With the tunes, Survive To You or River Of Dreams, Sivo's vocals are somewhat smoother, yet some edge remains. Here he reminds me a bit of Carl Sentance or Carsten Lizard Schulz (but that could be a stretch). Mostly, as a listener, I found Sivo's vocal style something of an acquired taste like mid-shelf vodka. Enough with the liquor comparisons. Nevertheless, musically speaking, Poison Rose with vocalist Marco Sivo offers fans a fine slice of melodic metal rock with tough riffs, big guitar solos, and plenty of rock groove. Recommended.
