The female-fronted metal machine keeps pumping out new bands like so many musical widgets. This month we're introduced to SheWolf a UK metal band featuring Angel Wolf-Black (aka The Shaman). She accompanied by three musicians who have also donned mysterious names: The Hunter (guitars), The Predator (bass), and The Alpha (drums). The album is produced by Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis, Temperance, ERA) and Marco Pastorino (Temperance, Virtual Symmetry, Even Flow). SheWolf is their debut studio album.
Call me jaded from 20-plus years of an abundance of female-fronted symphonic or Gothic or some mix of death/black metal bands with operatic vocals, but that's basically what I expected from SheWolf. Well. Maybe not so much. There's definitely a symphonic character to the SheWolf's metal, even some notes of darker Gothic metal in the keyboards. And Angel is a strong vocalist, but I would not necessarily call her vocal style a high pitched and soaring opera style. She' more a traditional metal vocalist. But mostly, overall, I would say that SheWolf sound is grounded in traditional heavy metal, even classic European power metal, both with plenty of groove. In the end, its a mix of both. So then, some songs to consider for this formula: Moonbound, Welcome To The Pack, or Safe In The Dark. Thrill Of The Chase definitely kicks up the speed as power metal, yet with a soft segue around three minutes. I was looking for a metal ballad in the mix (not sure why) and I thought the came with the piano led Home and My Prayer. But both songs jump into the that faster power metal groove. Throughout one of the best distinguishing elements, beyond Elena strong clear vocals, was the roaring guitar solos. Hats off to whoever The Hunter is for that handiwork. All said, SheWolf sort of bucks the trend of most female-fronted metal bands, offering listeners more melodic heavy power metal, yet with those symphonic nuances. It's a solid debut. Recommended.
