Sunstorm: Brothers In Arms

Melodic Heavy Metal Rock
4.0/5.0

The history of Sunstorm dates back to 1999 when founding member and original vocalist Joe Lynn Turner created the band with American and European musical cohorts. With Turner at the helm, beginning in 2006, the band had a string of five studio albums until Turner vacated the microphone. With 2021's Afterlife, vocalist Ronnie Romero (The Ferrymen, Lords Of Black, et al) joined a revived lineup that also included new drummer Michele Sanna. The band's musical style also took a turn, but we'll get to that in a moment. Now Sunstorm returns with their second long player with Romero at the mic. Brothers In Arms features veteran Italian guitarist Luca Princiotta in the spot replacing DGM's Simone Mularoni.

Sunstorm: Ronnie Romero

If you recall Sunstorm's sound became somewhat heavier at the end of Joe Lynn Turner's tenure. When recruiting Romero on vocals, this change became more prominent. Generally, Romero is a metal singer. He has an assertive sometimes raw voice, yet remains melodic. The songs of Afterlife where written to Romero's vocal style, and so the album leaned to heavier melodic rock with AOR aspirations. This formula has been made complete and constant with this year's Brothers In Arms. The tunes within definitely turn more upon melodic heavy metal rock, perhaps less on AOR, and maybe infused with power metal nuances. You might hear this alteration with No Turning Back, Living Out Of Fear, or the title track, Brothers In Arms (none without prominent groove). Essentially, the album

Other tracks of interest include Games We Play or I Will Remember which turn on heavier rock with an abundance of guitar and vocal harmony. The notable AOR presence comes with Back My Dreams and Taste Of Home, back to back softer numbers, yet still rising with some potency. All said, I found that Brothers In Arms cements both Sunstorm's current heavier melodic rock sound and Romero's presence within. It's a mature evolution which will likely gain more traction and return in the future (unless Sunstorm changes singers again). Recommended.
