Arriving from Brazil, Tarmat is a band of friends, friends who have been making music together in various bands since 2006. Moreover, Eduardo Marcolino (guitars) and Gabriel Aquino (keyboards) are actually childhood friends who play in Anxtron, an instrumental prog band. Tarmat was formed during the COVID crisis with intent to create AOR melodic rock. Out Of The Blue is their debut album for Frontiers Music.
Musically, Tarmat is spot on with their brand of AOR melodic rock. My first impression was a simple one: this is pretty mellow stuff. But not always. Hold that thought. Several other characteristics rise to the surface. One is solid songwriting. I wouldn't go so far to say this is prog, but there's a creativity here that succeeds in combining essential song melody and harmony with interesting arrangements. Many times this arises from the superb guitar solos, yet also the use well-placed synths or piano lines.
These fine elements are found within A song such as True Colors, Out Of The Blue, Moving Backwards, and the quite mellow The Knight. More Than Less has synths that remind of old school Hammond organ (perhaps it really is). The combination of piano and subtle guitar give Gibberish an airy atmospheric feeling to feed the song's flow. The bass is nice too. As for the aforementioned not so mellow song, it's Rosetta Stone. In comparison to the rest, it's heavier and spry with spunk. All in all, the arrival of Tarmat and their debut album Out Of The Blue is fine addition to the AOR melodic rock genre with entertaining songs crafted with talented musicianship. If you're a fan, this is a necessary purchase. Listen to the videos, and support the band.
