The Ferrymen: One More River To Cross

Melodic Heavy Metal Rock
4.5/5.0

Once more we revisit with power triad The Ferrymen, one of my favorite heavy metal bands in recent years. If you don't know the band it features three musical stalwarts from the European heavy metal and hard rock scene: Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall), vocalist Ronnie Romero (Lords of Black, Sunstorm, Rainbow), and drummer Mike Terrana (Rage, Axel Rudi Pell, etc.). One More River To Cross is their latest and third studio project for Frontiers Music.

The Ferrymen

There's a great many things I appreciate about The Ferrymen and their music. First is simply the fine song composition by Magnus Karlsson. He consistently and creatively blends the best of melodic heavy metal with hard rock rhythm and groove, then and often gives songs a lush and epic atmosphere with his synth stylings. Of course, his guitar solos kill. Another exceptional feature to their music is the fine song melody, harmony (vocal and guitar), and catchy refrains which give many songs that subtle AOR arena readiness. Alternatively, I've had some qualms over the years with Ronnie Romero's vocal style which can be assertive and raspy. But I've always found his work with The Ferrymen (as opposed to other projects) to be the best context for his voice. Somehow Karlsson's song melody and harmony brings out the same in Romero's voice to a larger and better degree. Finally, with one gander at the brutish-looking Mike Terrana you might think his muscular might would pummel the songs with his drumming. But no, his ability to drive each song with rock rhythm and groove is exceptional.

All these characteristics combine for a fine mix of quite catchy and entertaining melodic metal. For a few songs more hard and heavy, yet with groove, listen for One More River To Cross and Hunt Me To The End Of The World. Perhaps even heavier, maybe with some power metal vibe, are Bringers Of The Dark and City Of Hate, the latter living up to its title with its aggressive riffs and pacing. Alternatively, The Last Wave, while heavy and dense, has some of that AOR quality, especially in the softer vocal parts which twists against the former. All in all, The Ferrymen's One More River To Cross is another fine and entertaining album of the trio's groove-infused melodic heavy metal. Easily recommended.
