Nearly seven months to the day, Swedish band Degreed returns with their seventh studio album, Public Address. The COVID pandemic put a halt to their touring. But not to be slowed down the foursome dropped 2022's Are You Ready. All this merely demonstrate that Degreed is keeping pace with a career that will soon reach two decades of melodic hard rock.
Which is to say that Degreed follows in the tradition of classic (and timeless) AOR melodic hard rock that spans better than a generation. The band is hardly a throw back phenomena. But rather an always fresh approach to a genre fans know and love. With that said, some fans might notices some slight nuances to the music within Public Address.
Not to totally kick out the AOR references, but this album is a bit bolder, even heavier in parts. Surely, song melody and vocal harmony remain, along with guitar harmony, rock groove in the rhythm section, catchy choruses, and epic guitar solos. These elements are the stalwarts of any AOR tunes. Yet some songs have some real punch, a near melodic metal groove. For this description, I would suggest Ride Along, Big Plans, Who Are You, and perhaps also Resist The Urge and Pressure. Yet, the AOR factor does rise significantly with the piano-inspired tunes Don't Be A Stranger and A Safe Place. Then there's This Is Love which as a subdued subtle groove in the first half, only to build heavier with the guitar solo in the second half.
All said, and quite simply, Public Address is all and exactly what you would expect from Degreed: melodic hard rock with AOR nuances but also some stronger kick and punch in some tunes. Easily recommended.
