Heroes And Monsters: Heroes And ...

Hard & Heavy Rock
4.0/5.0

In the tradition of bands like ZZ Top, On Top, The Ferrymen, or The Rods, we welcome a new power trio: Heroes And Monsters. The band features three friends and veterans from hard rock and heavy metal: Todd Kerns on vocals and bass (Slash, Bruce Kulick, Toque, et al); Guitarist Stef Burns (Alice Cooper, Huey Lewis, Berlin, et al); and Drummer Will Hunt who has worked with Michael Sweet, George Lynch, Vince Neil, and more.

Heroes And Monsters

Punch and throttle define the Heroes And Monsters musical style. The songs are hard and heavy (punch) and then delivered often, but not always, with some haste (throttle). The riffs are rough and rousing yet with inherent harmony. The rhythm section is perhaps tougher, heavy and thick, yet still laying down rock groove. All these things are tempered by some unexpected but natural song melody and Kern's vocal harmony.

Then there's the twist of short, softer and sublime guitar lines to work with Kern's voice. You'll hear this within Angels Never Sleep, Don't Tell Me I'm Wrong, or And You'll Remain. All three become heavy, the latter perhaps more subdued. But the punch and throttle come with Locked And Loaded but more so with the hard charging Raw Power and Set Me Free. I Knew You Were The Devil is the toss up, heavy yet with undetermined tempo. for some odd reason, perhaps Kerns' voice, Break Me reminded me of an AC/DC song. Maybe not.

All in all, if you like your rock hard and heavy, compact and condensed, with big riffs, thick groove, and punchy guitar solos, you will enjoy power trio Heroes And Monsters and their debut album. Recommended.
