Icon Of Sin: Legends

Traditional Heavy/Power Metal
5.0/5.0

We were first introduced to Brazil's Icon Of Sin in 2021 with their self-titled debut album, a solid album of traditional heavy metal. Now the quintet returns with their sophomore effort, Legends The band features vocalist Raphael Mendes, known for his many Iron Maiden (among others) covers on YouTube. Once more Icon is assisted in songwriting and production notable Brazilian musicians Sergio Mazul (Semblant) and Marcelo Gelbcke (Landfall). For the new album Gelbcke enjoys a third role, sharing lead guitar. The recording also introduces to new drummer Markos Franzmann (San La Muerte, ex-Legacy of Kain).

Icon Of Sin

As alluded to above, Icon Of Sin plays traditional, keep it true, heavy metal, with no compromise. As once said, old school is the new school. The traditional elements remain: twin guitar harmony and leads, gallop and groove in the rhythm section, and Mendes Dickinson-esque vocal style. Or Tobi Sammet. If you're a Maiden purist, then he doesn't sound like Bruce at all. Let the listener decide.

Casting Maiden comparisons aside, Legends delivers exactly what Icon Of Sin lives and breathes: classic heavy metal. In a modern context, you will find few bands who nail the genre with such entertaining satisfaction. For metal with power metal gallop you'll find Heart Of The Wolf, Cimmerian, Wheels Of Vengeance, and the sequel Clouds Over Gotham Pt.2 – The Arkham Knight. That latter song reminds also of the importance of groove in trad metal. So you'll find the same with in Terror Games and Night Force, a fine fist pumper. With The Scarlet Gospels or Black Sails And Dark Waters, Icon will twist the tempos for two lengthy metal anthems. Needless to say, the guitar solos are epic throughout.

All in all, with Legends, Icon Of Sin offers fans another hefty, deliberate, and entertaining album of keep it true heavy metal. Up the irons, and get this album. Easily recommended.
