Hailing from Freiburg, Germany, Kerrigan is a new project from Bruno Schotten (g,b) and Jonas Weber (v,g), the fellows behind funeral doom metal band, Lone Wanderer. The seeds for Kerrigan were planted when the two musicians were rehearsing for Lone Wanderer. Riffing in a traditional heavy metal fashion, the duo discovered they had a strong desire to create classic heavy metal. The two cut a demo, Heavy Metal 2020 with four songs including a cover of Rest In Peace by UK NWoBHM legends Wolf. Kerrigan would return to the studio to record their debut album Bloodmoon with long time friend Jonathan Doring on drums.
With that history, I gave away the Kerrigan sound. Theirs is keep it true heavy metal driven by twin guitar riffage, rock groove in the rhythm section, clean melodic vocals, and plenty of ripping guitar solos. The combination of the wall of rhythmic riffage and soaring vocals gives many songs an epic bombastic feeling. In old school fashion, Kerrigan offers eight songs over 41 minutes suitable for publishing on vinyl.
Sampling some songs, besides being blatantly guitar-driven metal, you'll find songs both fast and heavy and those more moderate in pacing. To the former, songs such as Pull The Trigger, Forces Of Night, and Eternal fire race along like first generation power metal tunes. Alternatively, to the latter, Bloodmoon, Against The Westwind and Hold The Banner take a more modest pace, but not anything near their funeral doom counterpart.
All in all, Kerrigan's Bloodmoon is a solid, well-crafted, album of traditional heavy metal which will remind metalheads of the mighty days of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and its successors. If keep it true metal is your passion, you will dig Kerrigan. Easily recommended.
