Founded in 2011 by Bulgaria guitarist Nikolo Kotzev (Baltimoore, Brazen Abbot, et al), after returning to his native country. Kotzev and Kikimora would begin recording original music working guests such as Jorn Lande and Joe Lynn Turner, but also collaborating with the Bulgaria National Opera Theater. Ten years from their inception, Kikimora would release their debut English language album, Dirty Nails, gaining international recognition. Now the quintet returns with their second long player, For A Broken Dime.
With the new album, Kikimora continues their established musical formula. It's definitely a hybrid of sorts, combining melodic heavy and power metal with hard rock rhythm and groove and some AOR nuances. Said another way, Kikamora's music is hard and heavy yet melodic metal with some punch and groove. Moreover with the elemental layers, many songs are dense and bombastic.
Following that last description, you'll find some epic and bombastic tunes with Spell Of Love, For A Broken Dime, or Bound For Destruction. Similar in substance, yet with more AOR nuances is Edge Of Freedom which is equal parts rocker and arena anthem. I Am Ready delivers that hybrid of heavy power metal with dramatic rock rhythm and groove. You'll hear the latter in the terrific bass and drum build up at the beginning which then becomes the engine that drives the song. In the midst of this hard and heavy melodic metal rock is a ballad. Father and Son Song is a slow grooving emotional song moved by some fine piano, yet erupting twice with bombastic and heavy segues.
All in all, For A Broken Dime finds Bulgarian metal band Kikimora delivering another fine album of their hard and heavy melodic metal rock, yet juxtaposed with bombastic punch and AOR accessibility. Recommended.
