From New South Wales, Australia, Night Legion was formed in 2016, featuring musicians from the local Sydney underground metal scene (Arkenstone, Dungeon, Empires Of Eden, Darker Half, and more). The quintet quickly visited the studio to record their self-titled debut album, Night Legion, which was picked up by Germany's Massacre Records. Now, Night Legion returns six years later with their follow-up, Fight Or Fall. Still with Massacre, the band features new member Louie Gorgievski (Arkenstone, Crimsonfre) on vocals.
While traditional heavy/power metal bands are ubiquitous in the worldwide metal underground, Night Legion gave me pause and take notice for one reason. The band features veteran Australian guitarist and producer Stu Marshall, know for his service with a great many Aussie bands, including Dungeon, Empires Of Eden, Saint Lucifer, and Death Dealer. (That last band is a metal super group featuring Sean Peck, Mike LePond, and Ross The Boss.) Marshall is a talented metal guitarist showing his impressive skills across this album (which he also produced).
As to the content of the album, I gave away its substance above. This is classic heavy/power metal driven by twin guitars, punch and speed from the rhythm section, assertive vocals, and screaming guitar solos. Essentially, most songs are fast and heavy, such as Beyond The Crimson Dawn, Sparing Into The Black or, featuring Mike LePond, The Hounds Of Baskerville (which has a solemn vocal/guitar segue within).
Don't be fooled by songs with soft starts. At World's End and Fight Or Fall start with softer guitar entrances. The former quickly gets fast and heavy; the latter more steady metal. Similar is the closing number, The Hand Of Death, which combines some haste with a darker doom metal tone. Simply summarized, Australia's Night Legion and their sophomore album deliver a singular thing: traditional heavy/power metal featuring the skilled fret work of Sydney guitar icon Stu Marshall. Recommended to all fans of classic, keep-it-true metal.
