Talented and respected drummer, and sometime vocalist, Deen Castronovo has a musical career that spans over four decades. In those 40 years, he has performed with some iconic and outstanding bands: Bad English, Ozzy Osbourne, Hardline, and that relatively unknown band, Journey, to name a few. Last year, he played drums for Nashville super group, Generation Radio. And rejoined that little old band from the Bay Area for their recent album, Freedom.
Now, Castronovo returns with his Revolution Saints project wherein he is both lead vocalist and drummer. The fourth album, Eagle Flight, features a new band members, guitarist Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Iconic, et al) and bass player Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, Black Swan, The End Machine, ex-Dokken).
While Revolution Saints features Castronovo at the mic, it's also a showcase for some terrific songwriting. Which has evolved from his 40 years playing in the genres of AOR and melodic hard rock. Deen's solid melodic vocal style are joined to finely crafted song melody, harmony, groove, catchy refrains, and fiery guitar solos. Essentially, this formula also makes for a consistent album of entertaining songs. In other words, to wear out an old phrase, "It's all killer with no filler."
For catchy roaring rockers you have Set Yourself Free, Crime Of The Century, Talking Like Strangers, and Save It All. Perhaps more on the AOR side, there's Once More, Need Each Other, and Eagle Flight with it's fine piano line. A ballad comes with I'll Cry For You Tonight wherein you hear Castronovo's soulful side. All in all, Revolution Saints' Eagle Flight is another well-crafted, consistent, and entertaining album of AOR melodic hard rock, led by Deen Castronovo's expert drumming and fine vocals. Easily recommended.
