Hailing from Chile, vocalist James Robledo came to some international recognition when his band, Sinner's Blood, was signed to Frontiers Music to release their debut album Mirror Star in 2020. A mere one year later, the label would then recruit him for his own solo debut, Wanted Man. Not to rest on his laurels, Robledo returned this Spring with another new band Demons Down, pairing him with Italian guitarist Francesco Savino (False Memories). Now Robledo returns with his second solo project Broken Soul, again composing with fellow Chilean multi-instrumentalist Nasson.
Understanding Robledo's musical genre and influences is a matter of connecting the dots from Sinner's Blood to Wanted Man to Demons Down, then to the present. The common thread is melodic metal rock: the merger of melodic hard rock with a metal edge for a hard and heavy sound, yet not without song melody and harmony (for some AOR sensibility). And Robledo at the microphone is exercises his assertive, forceful vocal style.
Like his debut solo album, this formula is self-evident and expected. Broken Soul is simply, part deux. You'll hear this familiar concoction with Victims With No Crime, Broken Soul, Fire, the very metalish Dead City Lights, and To The End. One or two songs seem to turn on more heavy and steady tempos like Fire and Run And Hide which is quite plodding. For guitar work, you cannot beat Nasson's fine solos across this album. Definitely a strong highlight. All said, Broken Soul finds Chilean vocalist James Robledo in his main groove, delivering melodic metal rock dosed with song melody and harmony and fired up with Nasson's strong guitar work. Recommended.
