Arriving from Sweden, Streetlight is a new band featuring a quintet experienced musician active in the Swedish Music scene. This includes Johannes Hager, a professional music producer in Sweden (although originally from Finland). Hager is the producer and principal songwriter for Streetlight, also contributing lead vocals and guitar. The band is filled out with guitarist Filip Stenlund, keyboardist John Svensson, drummer Erik Nilsson, and bassist Johan Tjernström. Ignition is Streetlight's debut album for the Frontiers Music label.
Streetlight's principal musical focus is AOR melodic rock, siting influence from bands like Journey, Toto, Kansas, and Def Leppard. Their arrangements marked by an abundance of song melody, vocal harmonies (something quite prominent), up beat rock groove, then accentuated with bright synths, memorable refrains, and strong guitar solos.
All these elements are self-evident and appointed across this album, as is the AOR accessibility. Some feisty rockers arrive with Stay, Fire Burnin', Hit The Ground, and the quick-paced, guitar and groove driven Love Riot. Another song spiked with strong guitar work is Awake where the sharp riffs rise with the groove, leading to a sharper solo. Then Streetlight can dial things back to more anthemic AOR tunes with Closer and Caught Up In A Dream. A rising AOR ballad arrives with Words For Mending Hearts, driven by a fine piano melody and vocal harmonies.
All in all, for a debut album, Streetlight's Ignition is a fine first effort: a solid album of AOR melodic hard rock featuring strong vocal harmonies and guitar work. Easily recommended.
