Almost to the year, Swedish rockers Vypera return with their sophomore studio album, Race Of Time. Started as a cover band some seven years ago, the quintet quickly turned to writing their own material. With a name change and recognition from Italy's Frontiers Music, Vypera dropped their debut album Eat Your Heart Out. The band was praised for their classic sound and energy.
Race Of Time finds the band building upon both accolades and their musical style. Essentially, their sound is twin guitar driven melodic metal rock with ambitious rock rhythm and groove, quick pacing, and abundance of ripping guitar solos. I'm a major guitar solo fan. If you are too, you will love Cederick Forsberg' vibrant and ferocious fret work. If there is a subtle drawback it comes with the vocals. Wallstrom sings clean and melodic but is often difficult to understand, almost a mumble. He's also up against some rather assertive music too. Eventually, my hearing adjusted to this predicament.
Speaking to several songs, you'll find metal rockers, sharp and fast, with Riding On The Wind, Trying Hard To Run Away, Slave To Your Love, and Speedin', perhaps the fastest song here. Fool's Game, Vicious, and Stormwind dial the tempo back being more steady and heavy rockers. The latter could pass as a ballad. Mostly, across all the songs, you'll find to consistent things: sharp assertive riffs and awesome and numerous guitar solos. All said, if you enjoy classic, old school, twin guitar driven melodic metal rock, you will appreciate Vypera's latest and second album, Race Of Time. Very recommended.
