Featuring current and former members of Swiss bands Krokus, Gotthard, and Storace, Gotus was formed by guitaris Mandy Myer and drummer Pat Aeby in 2019. After a minor interruption from something called COVID-19, the band took final shape in 2002 with the addition of vocalist Ronnie Romero (Lords Of Black, The Ferryment, Elegant Weapons, etc), bassist Tony Castell (ex-Krokus, Crystal Ball), and keyboardist Alain Guy. The band has dropped three singles in advance of their self-titled debut, Gotus, on the Frontiers Music label.
As the adage goes, the apple doesn't fall from the tree, so Gotua does not stray from the players' respective musical roots. Gotus is, essentially, guitar-centered classic hard rock (in the Swiss tradition). You can some metal edge, but song melody and harmony are self-evident. With Romero you get clean vocals, yet wrapped up in his well-known gritty, razor blade style.
Giving the album a spin or two, you'll find it lives up to expections. Take Me To The Mountain and Beware Of The Fire rock hard and heavy, adding that metal edge. Alternatively, Undercover is pure rock n roll groove. When The Rain Comes has a definite blues vibe; perhaps also What Comes Around Goes Around: note the acoustic fret work at the start.
Without Your Love is mellow as compared to other songs, having an almost AOR feeling. Similar is the hard rock anthem, Love Will Find It's Way. But the true rock ballad comes with Children Of The Night, with its acoustic guitar and voice in the first third, then rising to the strength in riffs and vocals, only to follow with an acousti breakdown and outro.
All said, Gotus's debut album, driven by spry guitar work, solid songwriting and experienced musicianshp, is the very definition of classic melodic hard rock in the best tradition. Easily recommended.
